October 2006
Opening on May 14th 2007 to a site just next to the Slate Museum is Ropes and Ladders. This promises to be a really exciting experience for all ages, as you climb (in perfect safety!) 50ft towers, negotiating slack ropes high above the floor of the woodland by the Slate museum in Llanberis.
Y Bistro closes, but Pete's Bistro opens
Danny and Nerys, who ran Y Bistro for over 25 years as the best restaurant in the area, have retired, and the restaurant has been taken over by Pete of Pete's Eats across the road. They serve drinks and Tapas-style food in an informal friendly atmosphere from Tuesday to Saturday inclusive, food from 6.00pm until 11.00pm, and drinks 'from 6.00pm until late'. Though the style is very different, Pete is continuing the tradition of excellence - do go there at least once during your stay.
Home-made ice-cream now for sale in the village
Our home-made ice cream shop - Georgio's - has been open on the High Street for about a year now. All ice-cream is made on the premises and it is quite delicious. It may be only our opinion, but we think it beats the major name Cadwalladers of Criccieth, by a large margin!
Hafod Eryri
You may know that the Snowdon summit cafe and mountain railway station have been demolished and are in the process of being rebuilt. The new summit building, to be called 'Hafod Eryri' (Snowdon haven, or Snowdon refuge, in English) shlould be completed in May 2008. In the meantime, trains run as far as the Clogwyn station about three-quarters the way up (about 45 minutes' walk from the summit). To see photos and description of the work in progress, go to the Snowdonia Active Site's Blog.
Welsh curry house of the year
Just a few miles from Llanberis, on the way to Caernarfon, is the now-famous Sopna restaurant - "Welsh curry house of the year 2007". Up to now, this title has always been won by a restaurant in Cardiff, but this year the Sopna beat over 500 others throughout Wales to take the title. We have been ourselves several times and it really deserves the prize. Don't forget to include it on any trip to Snowdonia.
